Coproduction of Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Welsh National Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Houston Grand Opera.
The starting point is a tale by Charles Perrault from 1697 that has become a classic and tells the universal story of a young girl, mistreated by her own family, who manages to achieve her dream with a bit of magical help and goes on to become engaged to a princes who takes her away from poverty and turns her into a princess and a queen.
From thin mythical narration, Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) and the lyricist Jacopo Ferretti created a comical opera titles La Cenerentola which premiered at Rome’s Teatro Valle on February, 25th 1817 when Rossini was only 25. This opera does not respect the magical aspects of the original tale, but it does keep the social plot.
