Stendhal described it as “perfection of the comical genre”. L’Italiana in Algeri by Gioacchino Rossini tells the story of Isabella, a young Italian girl whose ship sinks and becomes stranded until she is captured by Algerian pirates and goes on to become a heroine when she manages to cunningly defeat and humiliate Mustafa, the ridiculous Bey of Algiers and find her long lost love, Lindoro, whom she frees from slavery, together with the rest of her Italian fellow countrymen.
